Living Legend - Dorothy Calegari... continued from previous page

help me through the chairs at CLSA, as she has done for everyone, but I was able to take that knowledge and the skills I developed
to help me in so many other areas of my life and business. All I can really say right now is THANK-YOU!!! You are amazing and you’ve
changed a lot of peoples lives for the best, me included….. thanks Dorothy!
        From Marty Crook _

My interactions with Dorothy are annually at the NALS/CLSA conferences. When I enter the convention area to survey the setup, I find
comfort in seeing Dorothy’s eagle eye knowing all that is going on; nobody enters without her knowing.
Dorothy is always on it and things are always running smoothly. From a vendor standpoint, I appreciate the care given to making sure
we have a great experience. From a personal standpoint, I see that she genuinely cares about our profession and the people.
        Thank You!

        From Ray and Nancy Almanzan_

There are so many things I can say about Dorothy, and all of them are good! She has been a great friend, mentor, and conference
compadre throughout the years. I heard about the legend of Dorothy for many years and saw from afar how the magic of a conference
came together under her direction. After a few years of holding conferences separately, I was fortunate to be the conference chair from
NALS when we joined forces with CLSA once again in 2010 and have enjoyed working with Dorothy and Crissy on conferences ever
since. Being behind the scenes brings an entirely different perspective of participating in a survey conference. Coordinating speakers,
exhibitors, meals, decorators, audio/visual, scholarship auction, moderators, student volunteers, and registration are only a few of the
many tasks that need to be done to put on a successful conference. Dorothy, Crissy, and their faithful and over-achieving staff have
succeeded year after year in this endeavor and always go above and beyond. Even at the conference, they are brainstorming new and
innovative ideas to incorporate into future conferences!

Dorothy’s involvement with the Western Federation of Professional Surveyors (WFPS) is just as legendary as it is with NALS. She has
been dedicated to the organization since its inception and her leadership and direction have made WFPS a model for other regional
groups to follow. WFPS, and NALS, are both fortunate Dorothy has shared her knowledge, passion, and fortitude for the surveying
profession and the respective professional associations with her compadre Crissy, who is also a rock star! The future of NALS and
WFPS is in great hands under their executive management and watchful guidance.

Ray and I have been blessed with the gift of Dorothy’s friendship. She is witty, generous, charming, and overall, simply fabulous! We
enjoy visiting with her in wine country, and even though she’s not much of a wine drinker, her hospitality is Magnifique! Good friends
are like wine, they’re great now and only get better with time. Thank you, Dorothy, for your great friendship!

        Screamin’ Around with Dorothy
It was sometime in the early 2000’s, maybe 2004, I think, that the Executive Committee from California Land Surveyors Association,
after one of its pre-Board meetings, decided to let off a little steam after what is remembered as a long day preparing for the next. At
the time, the ExCom and Board meetings were held in the Bay Area in one of the Burlingame hotels. Burlingame was just a bit north of
Redwood City where one of the ExCom members knew of a place called Malibu Grand Prix Race Track. This is a gokart racetrack with
timed runs and, importantly, what were called “high performance” go carts. They can hit 45 mph on the straight runs, are surprisingly
fast off the starting light, and it’s easy enough to four-wheel drift around the hairpin turns. At the ground level, it is exciting. That
particular ExCom member would stop occasionally at the Malibu Grand Prix Race Track to de-stress for the road trip home. Of course,
after a purchase of at least ten adrenaline pumping runs around the course, getting in one’s own vehicle for a trip down Hwy 101 would
prompt some, shall we say, speeds higher than posted. At least one speeding ticket was suffered, so I am told.

To return to the story… Ms. Calegari was well known to have a heavy foot on the accelerator of her Jaguar. And she professed to enjoy
“driving fast”. So the Malibu Grand Prix Race Track was suggested as a perfect and fun way to see how everyone would take to the event
and maybe even see some performance driving by Dorothy herself.

Upon arrival, the tickets were purchased (inside), the helmets were fitted (inside) and the safety regs were reviewed (inside). Once
outside, however, it was clear that these were not toy go-karts. They kicked butt. Ms. Calegari voiced some reticence, you know, too low,
too small, never drove one, don’t know the track, blah blah. Lucky for Dorothy, there were TWO-SEATERS! So that ExCom member with
the – ahem – ticket experience invited Ms. Calegari for a ride. It’ll be fun, you know, nice and easy, blah blah. With some shaming from
the rest of the crew, she capitulated.

These cars are, shall we say, snug. And you have to wear some professional safety harnesses that are meant to keep the neophytes in
the car if it happens to go off course, hit the hay bales or roll (yes, this happens). So the two-seater rolls up to the start line, the car gets
pre-loaded with half throttle, brakes on, the lights run down and we are off. Dorothy’s screaming begins.

First couple of turns the G forces push against the restraints, the curbs get hit to pull one side of the car up off the ground. More
