The We then visited one of the Von Schmidt Monument Historic Park. I
thought since Trent received the Von Schmidt Award, he should see
one of the Von Schmidt monument.
President’s As you all may know, the Nevada Legislature will be in Session
Message beginning, February 2023. The NALS Legislative Committee is
beginning to review Bill Drafts and will be looking for proposed
legislation that may impact our profession. If in your course of work,
you come across any legislation that we should be aware of, please
contact the NALS Central office.
I look forward to servicing the Nevada Association of Land Surveying
for the rest of the year as your President.
By: Robert Carrington, PLS , NALS President
As I sit here writing this report, I realize that the year is more than
half-way over. The Western Regional Survey Conference was
held March 30-April 2nd, 2022 at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas in
conjunction with the Land Surveying Professional Associations of
Arizona (APLS), California (CLSA), Nevada (NALS), Utah (UCLS), and
the Western Federation of Professional Land Surveyors (WFPS) and
was a great success. Nearly 900 Surveyors, vendor and students
were in attendance for the first in-person conference since 2019.
We had great list of speakers and topics that included Kris Kline
and Jeff Lucas. I would like to personally thank the hard work of
the conference committee for putting on an unbelievable event. I
was honored to award the 2021 “Surveyor of the Year” to Past-
President Justin Moore. Justin and I have served together the
last 4 years on the NALS State Board and I have witnessed his
commitment and dedication to NALS. His present position of
Immediate Past-President has helped the Board with his leadership
and professionalism.
I was also honored to give the “Von Schmidt Award” to my
friend Trent Keenan. Trent is the 4th recipient of the Award and
it honors the member who has contributed to the profession for
both California (CLSA) and NALS (Nevada). For those who know
Trent, he has become quite the public speaker, but he was totally
unaware that we were honoring him with the award and during the About the Cover...
presentation, he was shocked and speechless.
Now to other business, If you read the Nevada Traverse Vol. 49,
No. 2, June 2022, you will remember that the theme of the edition
was “Public Outreach.” During our January Board meeting, we had
lots of discussion on how we could help attract more people into
our professions. The Outreach Committee is one our standing
committees and may be the toughest. We as Professional Land
Surveyors, no matter where you reside should realize that we
are an aging profession. With the changes to the requirements
for licensure, we are now retiring more Surveyors than we are
licensing. In my 31 years of being a NALS member, I have never
seen the committee do more reaching out the young men and
women by introducing them to the role and career opportunities of
Land Surveying. If we can get the Survey Program going at College
of Southern Nevada, this may eventually reduce the downward
trend of licensing new Surveyors.
Last month our Board meeting was held July 14th in Reno, with
some of the Board Members present via Zoom. The following day,
the Lahontan Chapter held their Annual Golf Tournament at Toiyabe
Golf Club.
Later that day, Trent and I were traveling to Truckee California
and decided to check out a couple of Survey Monuments. We first A composite image of different photos taken from the article Living Legend -
