The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is pleased to announce exciting opportunities to join their team for the upcoming Spring 2025 semester. There are currently two opportunities available.
Full-Time Position:
CSN is actively seeking a full-time instructor to teach and develop the new Bachelor's Degree Program in Land Surveying/Geomatics.
If you are interested in this full-time role, please submit your resume to:
Peter Lanagan, Ph.D., M.Ed.
(Contact Information Below)
Part-Time Position:
While the search for a full-time professor is ongoing, CSN is also looking to fill a part-time position for a Professional Land Surveyor (with or without a degree) to teach the two specific courses listed below in the Spring 2025 semester.
CEE 121 - Elementary Surveying
Description
Vertical and horizontal control methods: This course involves topographic and construction survey methods, use of land survey equipment, note taking, and graphical communication. This course has applications to earthwork and highway alignment.
Student Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate the ability to setup a tripod over a monument.
Demonstrate the ability to measure distances using a steel tape/chain, pacing, total station and GPS.
Demonstrate the ability to measure/derive elevations/heights using an automatic level, total station and GPS. Perform level loop/circuit analysis.
Demonstrate competence in measuring horizontal and vertical angles using a total station.
Perform closure adjustments to closed traverses using the Compass (Bowditch) Rule/Method.
Demonstrate understanding of projections (Transverse Mercator), datums (NAVD88, NAD83, WGS84), geoid, ellipsoid, orthometric heights, geographic coordinate systems, and state plane coordinate systems.
Prepare CAD drawings using field measurement data showing angles, bearings and distances, area, existing and proposed TIN surface, and coordinates. Also create topographic maps showing elevation contours.
Perform Earthwork calculations, and determine the volume between the existing and proposed surface.
SUR 280 – Introduction to Land Surveying
Description
A comprehensive study of angle measurement systems, taping, the traverse, differential leveling, profile leveling, plan and profile sheet, the circular curve, the vertical curve, the USGS 7.5-minute map, and elementary topographic mapping. The application of statistics to surveying, the assumptions underlying surveying on the plane, and reference surfaces are stressed in this course. In the laboratory portion of the course, students will make survey measurements, maintain a field book, and adjust survey data as appropriate. Weekly laboratory reports using the measured data to compute a survey product are required.
